About us
We look forward to welcoming you at the Pen-y-Bont Hotel, Talyllyn! Come and stay with us for Bed & Breakfast during the Summer Season from February 28th until early November 2025. Evening Meals are served most evenings and Packed Lunches can be provided on request.
We also have Motor Homes and Camper Vans staying with us on our Lakeside Car Park all year round. Each overnight stopover from 6pm is £10 per vehicle until 12 noon the next day. To park any vehicle on our car park during the daytime is £5.
For our Bed and Breakfast guests, parking is free.
We are situated on the B4405 opposite St. Mary’s Church. Our five letting rooms all overlook the magnificent sweeping slopes of Craig Goch mountainside. Each room is named after a local historical character. A booklet in your room tells you each of their stories.
We have three Double Guest Rooms, a Twin Guest Room and a larger Family Room that sleeps between three and five people. All rooms are ensuite with showers except the Family room, which has bathroom. The rooms all have flat screen TV's, free WiFi and and a courtesy tray with tea and coffee making facilities.
All rooms can be accessed to the rear of the building via a ramp with a Car Park should easier access be required.
NEW FOR 2025 - We once again are Dog Friendly! You can now stay in our Williams Idris Double room accompanied by your dog. There are lots of walks locally that you will be able to enjoy together. Please contact us directly to book for this facility. There is a nightly charge of £15 for your dog. Call 01654 782285 to get booked in!
We serve home-cooked food in our Fireside Restaurant, where you can enjoy the crackle and glow of the log fires on cooler evenings. On warm summer evenings you may prefer to drink and even dine on either the lakeside garden or the courtyard flower garden. The Fireside Bar is available to you in the evenings during your stay.
Just a 15 minute drive North and you will be in Dolgellau on the slopes of the Cader Idris mountain range. This pretty town has some lovely cafes and pubs and is popular with hill walkers and those accessing the popular Coed y Brenin cycle trails. It is also famous for Clogau Gold which can still be found in the surrounding hill streams. Go South and you come to the historical market town of Machynlleth. The central clock tower can often be seen on Welsh postcards and Machynlleth was the Administrative Centre for Owain Glyndwr in the 13th Century. As such, it can be described as the Ancient Capital of Wales.
To the West is the sea, and we are blessed with excellent sandy beaches such as Aberdyfi, Tywyn, Fairbourne and Barmouth. From the shore dolphins and porpoises can be seen swimming and little fishing boats set sail from the Dovey Estuary and Barmouth harbour. Local sites of interest include Dolgoch Falls, Castell y Bere and Corris Craft Centre. Of particular note is the Talyllyn Railway, which was the first old Narrow Gauge Railway to be restored in the world. Whereas it once carried quarried slate to the coast, the line now brings passengers to Abergynolwyn and beyond, coming within two miles of Talyllyn! It is a beautiful train journey up the Dysynni Valley that makes a great day out whatever the weather.
There are many local services and Sites of Interest within a ten-mile radius. A little further to the North is the Italianate village of Portmeirion and Harlech Castle. To the South is Aberystwyth, which is a larger town with many shops as well as a Seaside Promenade and Pier. Don’t worry if you are unsure of how to make the best of your visit: whether you have a taste for mountain walking, hidden castles, waterfalls, beautiful beaches, our steam trains, we will be delighted to put you on the right track!
Nature lovers can look out for Otters and Pine Martens, Osprey and Red Kite. All are seen around the lake. For aircraft enthusiasts we have a great view of the jets and other military planes on the "Mach Loop". During weekdays, you may be treated to the site of F - 15's, Typhoons and huge transporter aircraft, which can be quite spectacular within our narrow valley. There are nearby vantage points, on Bwlch Llyn Bach for example, where the pilots wave to the photographers! And greatest of all, the mighty Cadair Idris, the highest mountain peak in the south of Eryri (Snowdonia). Fine views and legends of old await you here!
